How Backup Manager Works
Backup Manager allows you to control what gets backed up, how often and how long backups are retained from your AGOL environment.
How does Backup Manager protect ArcGIS Online data
Backup Manager connects to your ArcGIS Online organisation through a standard OAuth integration. Once authorised it scans your hosted feature services, web maps and applications and creates encrypted backup copies in Avineon Tensing's cloud storage. You control what gets backed up, how often and how long backups are retained. Restoration works in reverse: select an item, choose a backup version and restore it to the same item or a new one.
What gets backed up?
Hosted feature services are backed up as file geodatabases, preserving feature geometry, attribute tables, attachments, domains and related tables. Each backup is a complete, standalone copy that can be downloaded for offline use.
Web maps are stored as JSON with all layer references, symbology, pop-up configurations and basemap settings intact. One-click restoration returns a web map to any previous state.
Applications Experience Builder apps, Dashboards, Instant Apps and StoryMaps are backed up with their full configuration JSON, including embedded content and editing settings.
ArcGIS Hub sites and ArcGIS Notebooks are not currently backed up. Hub and Notebook support is on the roadmap, targeted for the next 6 to 12 months. In the interim, Avineon Tensing can provide an FME-based workflow to capture and archive Hub and Notebook content alongside your Backup Manager subscription.
How does scheduling work?
You define backup schedules per item or in bulk. For each schedule you set:
- Frequency: daily or weekly
- Retention: how many backup versions to keep before older ones are pruned
- Notification: email alerts on completion, failure or both
Schedules run automatically. You do not need to keep a machine running or maintain a script. The SaaS platform handles execution, retries on failure and logs every run. You can view backup history and job status from the dashboard at any time.
Scheduled jobs run in your local timezone. Monthly and yearly scheduling are not currently available but are under review based on customer demand.
How does restoration work?
Restoration follows a three-step process:
1. Select the item: browse your backup catalogue by item type, name or date. Each backed-up item shows its version history with timestamps.
2. Choose the target: restore to the original item (overwriting the current version) or create a new item. Creating a new item is useful for comparing versions or recovering something without disrupting the live service.
3. Confirm and restore: the platform reconstructs the item from the backup. For feature services, this means re-creating the hosted service with all data, schema and metadata. For web maps, the JSON configuration is pushed back to ArcGIS Online.
Restoration does not affect other items. If you restore a feature service that underpins several web maps, those maps continue to reference the restored service automatically.
Where is the backup data stored?
Backups are stored in Avineon Tensing's cloud infrastructure, hosted on AWS. You can choose from a range of AWS geographic regions to meet data residency or compliance requirements. Data is encrypted at rest and in transit. Each customer's backups are logically isolated. You can also download file geodatabase copies to your own storage for offline archiving or compliance requirements.
Data sovereignty and EU compliance
Backup Manager is operated by Avineon Tensing. The platform is designed to support organisations with data sovereignty obligations. You choose which AWS region your backups reside in. The platform does not move or replicate your backup data across regions unless you request it. We do not access your backup data as part of routine operations.
